Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in Monroe, CT

Allergy Shots

Allergen immunotherapy, or allergy shots, is a long-term treatment that decreases symptoms of allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, and conjunctivitis (eye allergy) for many people. Immunotherapy can be beneficial to virtually anyone, from children over 5 years old to adults. Allergy shots function by decreasing sensitivity to allergens and usually lead to long-term relief from allergy symptoms after treatment has concluded. They are an affordable and effective option to treat allergies for many people.

The effectiveness of allergy shots varies depending on the length of the treatment program and the dose of the allergen. When being treated by our allergists at Monroe, consider the length of your allergy season and the extremity of your symptoms.

Build-Up Phase

The building up for allergy immunotherapy includes a series of injections with increasing amounts of the allergens between 3 and 4 times each week. Depending on how often the injections are received, most patients develop tolerance around the 8 month mark, although results may vary.

Maintenance Phase

When the effective dose is reached, the maintenance phase begins. The effective maintenance dose may vary depending on your sensitivity to the allergen and your response to the build-up phase. In the maintenance phase, treatments are received 2 times per week, spaced 3 days apart from each other. Your Monroe allergist or immunologist will decide the best range for you.

During this phase, you may notice a decrease in symptoms. Maintenance treatment is continued for 4 months if allergy shots are successful, and is followed by an annual retest to determine future treatment. Future treatment may include injections for the following year. Any decision to stop allergy shots should be discussed with your allergist / immunologist.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy shots can decrease symptoms of many different allergies and prevent the development of new ones. If after 4 months of therapy there’s no improvement, your Monroe allergist or immunologist will work to create a new treatment plan with you.
