Addressing Common Sleep Disorders

If you suffer from a sleep disorder then look no further than our top of the line sleep clinic here in Norwalk. Our experienced sleep technicians fully understand the important role sleep plays in both your mental and physical health, and are on hand to diagnose and treat your sleep disorder and help improve your sleeping patterns.

Common symptoms from sleeping disorders:

  • Increased sleepiness during the day
  • Restlessness while sleeping at night
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Increased periods of urination during the night
  • Irregular breathing during the night
  • Loud snoring
  • Difficulty staying awake during daytime, daily activities
  • Nightmares
  • Feeling burnt out

What is Sleep Testing?

At your initial consultation, our doctors will gather medical history and discuss your sleep problems. Following your consultation, our technicians will perform sleep studies, or polysomnograms used to analyze and diagnose sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, periodic limb movements of sleep, parasomnias (sleep behaviors), and narcolepsy. To conduct these tests, patients are required to stay overnight at a sleep laboratory or sleep center to be closely monitored.

Types of Sleep Tests We Use

Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)
After performing a polysomnogram, our technicians will conduct a daytime sleep study called a Maintenance of Wakefulness Test, to measure your ability to stay awake and alert all day. The MWT test involves several trials each with a two-hour break in between. Upon completion of the test, one of our Norwalk sleep technologists will analyze the results of your sleep study and make an assessment of your daytime sleepiness. The assessment will be passed along to a referring physician who will share the results directly with you.

Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)
A Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) is administered to help determine your level of daytime sleepiness by measuring the rate at which you fall asleep during the day.  This test assists with the diagnosis of narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia.

Positive Airway pressure Therapy (PAP-NAP)
A PAP-NAP consists of a daytime PAP session that lasts anywhere from 2-5 hours and is best suited for those who have anxiety about PAP therapy or experience insomnia, nightmares, PTSD or claustrophobia. A sleep technician will work directly with you who will use relaxation, deep breathing and desensitization techniques to help you be more comfortable with PAP therapy. The overall goal of the therapy sessions is to help you use PAP therapy for more than an hour.

Sleep Treatment Options in Norwalk

Sleep Therapy
Some sleeping disorders, such as insomnia, PTSD, and mood disorders, may require a combined prescription and sleep therapy treatment plan. CBT, which is a therapy specific to insomnia, identifies and changes thoughts and behaviors that directly affect your ability to fall asleep. Once sleep patterns are changed, we will then suggest necessary changes to your daily routine as well. These changes include sleep hygiene, sleep restriction, relaxation training, stimulus control and cognitive therapy.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy (CPAP)
For patients suffering with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) a CPAP machine is used to allow for easier breathing while you sleep. The CPAP machine helps keep your airway from collapsing when breathing by increasing the air pressure in your throat.

Oral Appliance Therapy
In some cases of snoring and/or OSA, it may be necessary to custom fit a sleep appliance that, in addition to improving your sleep, will revitalize your health and restore your levels of alertness. Our sleep specialists will prescribe and custom fit your Oral Appliance to easily suit your lifestyle.

Lifestyle Changes
In addition to therapies or appliances, your sleep specialist may recommend weight loss as part of your personalized treatment plan, since it can help reduce your OSA symptoms. OSA is a common disorder in overweight individuals and lifestyle changes can help to avoid additional health issues such as increased high blood pressure, stroke or heart disease.

Surgical Options
If we determine that surgery is necessary to treat your sleep condition, we may recommend uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). UPPP will ease your OSA symptoms by removing excess tissue in the throat to increase the width of your airway and allow air to move more freely when you breathe.
