What is Sleep Testing?

Sleep studies, or polysomnograms, are tests to diagnose sleep disorders like sleep apnea, periodic limb movements of sleep, parasomnias (sleep behaviors), and narcolepsy. They involve spending the night sleeping at a sleep laboratory or sleep center to be monitored for a proper diagnosis. Typically, these studies will be ordered after you have seen a healthcare provider at a clinic visit and have discussed your sleep problems.

Types of Sleep Tests We Use

Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)
The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test is a daytime sleep study that measures your ability to stay awake and alert during the day. After we perform a polysomnogram (PSG), this test will have several sleep trials with two hours breaks in between each. Once completed, one of our Orange sleep technologists will review the results of your sleep study to assess your daytime sleepiness, and a referring physician will go over the results with you.

Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)
The Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) can help determine your level of excessive daytime sleepiness by measuring how fast you fall asleep during the day which can often help diagnose narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia.

Positive Airway pressure Therapy (PAP-NAP)
A PAP-NAP consists of a daytime PAP session that lasts anywhere from 2-5 hours and is best suited for those who have anxiety about PAP therapy or experience insomnia, nightmares, PTSD or claustrophobia. A sleep technician will work directly with you who will use relaxation, deep breathing and desensitization techniques to help you be more comfortable with PAP therapy. The overall goal of the therapy sessions is to help you use PAP therapy for more than an hour.

For snoring or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) you may be custom-fitted with a sleep appliance that will not only improve your sleep but revitalize your health and restore your alertness. A custom Oral Appliances will be prescribed by your sleep specialist, and will fit seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Lifestyle Changes
Your sleep specialist may recommend weight loss as part of your treatment plan as it can improve or reduce obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) symptoms. OSA is common in overweight individuals and if lifestyle changes are not made can lead to increased high blood pressure, stroke or even heart disease.

Surgical Options
If we determine that surgery is necessary for your sleep condition, we may recommend uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). This procedure includes removing excess tissue in the throat, which can help the airway become wider, allowing air to move more freely when you breathe, easing the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
