Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in East Haven, CT
Allergy Shots
Allergen immunotherapy or otherwise known as allergy shots, is yet another treatment offered at our East Haven clinic. These shots are a long-term treatment for those suffering from rhinitis, allergic asthma, or conjunctivitis (eye allergy.) This treatment is administered to patients over the age of 5 and presents with many benefits including the simple fact that they contribute to long lasting symptom relief and are very cost-effective.
The results of allergy shots will vary depending upon the dose of the allergen and the length of your treatment program. Here at the East Haven center, we strive to develop effective personalized treatment plans that are based upon allergy season timelines and the severity of your symptoms.
Build-Up Phase
The build-up phase, which includes administering injections with increased amounts of allergens 3 or 4 times per week, will typically last about 8 months, but is dependent on how often the injections are received and how well they are tolerated. Our allergy doctors and physicians will monitor the progress of our patients to ensure the build-up phase is successful.
Maintenance Phase
Once an effective dose level of a patient is determined, the maintenance phase will begin. In the maintenance phase, treatment schedules are adjusted to twice per week, with 3 days between each treatment. The immunologists and allergy physicians here in the East Haven clinic work closely with you in determining the most effective treatment plan for you.
Patients often note a decrease in symptoms during this phase, which typically lasts approximately 4 months. It is then followed up with an annual test to determine if additional injections are further required. If a patient wants to terminate allergy shots, they must first discuss it with their allergist or immunologist.
How Effective Are Allergy Shots?
Allergy shots help to decrease symptoms affiliated with many allergies and can also prevent the development of new allergies. If you have not experienced some level of improvement after 4 months of therapy, however, the allergy providers here in East Haven will redesign a new personalized treatment plan to better suit your needs.
