Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in New Milford, CT

Allergy Shots

Allergen immunotherapy or commonly referred to as Allergy shots, is another treatment option we offer here at our New Milford clinic. Shots are a long-term treatment for people suffering from rhinitis, allergic asthma, or conjunctivitis (eye allergy.) A treatment provided to patients over 5 years of age, immunotherapy is quite beneficial, contributes to long lasting relief from symptoms and is cost-effective.

Depending upon the dose of the allergen as well as the term of your treatment program, the effectiveness of allergy shots will vary. Treatment plans are customized based upon allergy season timelines coupled with the severity of your symptoms by our allergy doctors and physicians ensure maximum results.

Build-Up Phase

The build-up phase treatment involves administering injections with increased amounts of allergens between 3-4 times per week. The length of the treatment depends upon how often the injections are received and how well the shots are tolerated. Typically, a phase runs for near to 8 months.

Maintenance Phase

The maintenance phase of treatment begins once your effective dose level is reached. This level is determined by sensitivity to allergens and patients’ responsiveness to the build-up phase. Once entering the maintenance phase, treatment schedules are adjusted to twice per week, with 3 days between each treatment. Our immunologists and allergy doctors here in the New Milford clinic will work with you and determine your best course of treatment.

Often times a decrease in symptoms is noted during this important phase. With the successful application of allergy shots, your maintenance treatment will typically continue for 4 months. Thereafter, an annual test is performed to determine if additional injections are needed moving forward. If you prefer to terminate allergy shots, this must be discussed with your allergist or immunologist.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Certainly, allergy shots can be quite effective in that they decrease symptoms affiliated with many allergies and can also prevent the development of new allergies. If, however, you have not experienced improvement after 4 months of therapy, the allergy providers here in New Milford will design a more personalized treatment plan to suit your needs.
