Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in Stamford, CT

Allergy Shots

Allergen immunotherapy or better known as Allergy Shots, is a very effective long-term treatment for allergies.  Allergy shots decrease symptoms related to rhinitis, allergic asthma, or conjunctivitis (eye allergy) and also decrease sensitivity to allergens overall.  Adults and children over the age of 5 can receive this treatment which is also very cost-effective.

The effective results of allergy shots vary from patient to patient.  Results are primarily dependent upon the length of the treatment program, the dose of the allergen, the severity of symptoms and the length of the allergy season as well.

Build-Up Phase

During the build-up phase of your treatment our allergy doctors will administer injections with increasing amounts of the allergens approximately 3-4 times per week. The duration of your build-up phase will depend on how often you receive injections and how well you tolerate them. This phase is scheduled to extend over 8 months.

Maintenance Phase

Following the build-up phase and the determination of your effective dose, you will enter the maintenance phase of treatment.  Treatments during the maintenance phase take place 2 times per week and have a longer stretch of time, usually 3 days, between each treatment.  Our dedicated allergists here in Stamford will determine the best course of action for you.

During this maintenance phase, you may very well notice a decrease in symptoms, as a result of your allergy shots.  If this is the case, maintenance treatment will be continued for 4 months. At the end of the 4-month period, a test is performed to determine if you require additional injections.  If you decide to terminate treatment, you must consult with your immunologist.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy Shots are an effective treatment that decreases many symptoms affiliated with different allergies.  They also help to prevent the development of new allergies. If, improvement is not seen, however, your Stamford allergist or immunologist will work with you to redesign and develop an improved treatment plan.
