Allergy Shots
Allergy Shots (Allergen immunotherapy) are a very common, long-term form of treatment for various types of allergies. They are very effective in decreasing symptoms and sensitivity to allergens and also help prevent the development of other allergies. This treatment is administered to children age 5 and over as well as adults.
The effectiveness of allergy shots will depend on the severity of the patient’s symptoms, the length of their treatment program, the allergen dosage, and the length of the allergy season, and will vary from patient to patient.
Build-Up Phase
The build-up phase, which usually lasts about 8 months, but is determined by how often injections are needed and how well they are tolerated, requires the administering of injections with increasing amounts of allergens 3 or 4 times per week.
Maintenance Phase
Once your allergist has formulated your effective dose, you will then enter the maintenance phase of your treatment. During this phase you will receive treatment twice per week with 3-day breaks in between. The most effective course of treatment will be determined by your immunologist.
Many patients notice decreased symptoms during the maintenance phase. If this occurs, your maintenance phase will be continued for a 4-month period. At the end of the 4 months, we will administer a test to determine if you require further injections. If you decide no more injections are wanted or needed, you must talk with your allergy doctor.
