Allergies We Treat in Waterbury, CT (Frost Rd.)

Food Allergies

Nearly 4-6% of children suffer from simple and complex food allergies, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Many of these children suffer from a life-threatening reaction called Anaphylaxis.  This complex reaction impairs breathing and also causes the blood pressure to drop, and, therefore, requires immediate treatment by a certified allergist.  Here at our Waterbury clinic our team of allergy doctors will administer an injection of epinephrine (adrenaline) to counteract the reactions of Anaphylaxis. Whether suffering from Anaphylaxis or any other allergies, your team of allergists here in Waterbury is on hand to treat your every condition.

Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in Waterbury, CT (Frost Rd.)

Allergy Shots

Allergy Shots (Allergen immunotherapy) are a very common, long-term form of treatment for various types of allergies.   They are very effective in decreasing symptoms and sensitivity to allergens and also help prevent the development of other allergies.  This treatment is administered to children age 5 and over as well as adults.

The effectiveness of allergy shots will depend on the severity of the patient’s symptoms, the length of their treatment program, the allergen dosage, and the length of the allergy season, and will vary from patient to patient.

Build-Up Phase

The build-up phase, which usually lasts about 8 months, but is determined by how often injections are needed and how well they are tolerated, requires the administering of injections with increasing amounts of allergens 3 or 4 times per week.

Maintenance Phase

Once your allergist has formulated your effective dose, you will then enter the maintenance phase of your treatment.  During this phase you will receive treatment twice per week with 3-day breaks in between. The most effective course of treatment will be determined by your immunologist.

Many patients notice decreased symptoms during the maintenance phase.  If this occurs, your maintenance phase will be continued for a 4-month period.  At the end of the 4 months, we will administer a test to determine if you require further injections.  If you decide no more injections are wanted or needed, you must talk with your allergy doctor.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy Shots have proven to be one of the most effective treatments provided here at the Waterbury clinic.  Not only do they decrease your symptoms but they also prevent you from developing new allergies over time. If while receiving allergy shots, there is no improvement, your allergist will go back to the drawing board and redesign your personalized treatment plan.
