What Is an At Home Sleep Test?

At-home sleep tests are used to measure the number of pauses an individual experiences in the absence of breathing and aids in the evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea.  In addition, at-home tests can determine breathing difficulties, including shallow breathing. If you present with sleep apnea symptoms, an at-home sleep test is highly recommended.

Common Sleep Apnea symptoms include:

  • Waking up with a very sore or dry throat
  • Loud snoring
  • Occasionally waking up with a choking or gasping sensation
  • Sleepiness or lack of energy during the day
  • Sleepiness while driving
  • Morning headaches
  • Restless sleep

Though an at-home test is far more convenient for most people, they are not able to monitor how long you sleep and whether or not you are in a deep or light sleep.  Performing the test right in the comfort of your home is favored by many of our East Haven clients because they are able to test within their own surroundings. The readings that are calculated from at-home tests help our doctors to determine appropriate treatment plans.

At Home Sleep Tests

Sleep Apnea Testing

At-home sleep tests are intended to monitor your sleep and determine whether or not you stop breathing repeatedly while you sleep.  They are primarily used to determine if patients suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and aid in our overall diagnosis.

The highly skilled care providers here in East Haven will provide you with necessary data regarding the number of times you will need to perform your own at-home testing.  Your doctor will consult with you about the equipment, the protocol and the process which involves delicate sensors that need to be attached to your body.

Measuring Your Results

Once your sleep test has been completed, the team here in East Haven will study the results of your at-home testing and create an individual sleep study analysis of your sleep patterns which they will discuss with you at a follow up appointment.  At your second appointment, your doctor will be able to advise whether or not you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea.

If the study reveals that you do not suffer from OSA, there is a likelihood that you suffer from another type of sleep disorder that may present with similar symptoms.  Our professional staff will work with to determine the ultimate source of your symptoms by way of additional testing and analyses. You may ultimately need to be referred to a sleep specialist.

Sleep Disorder Treatment

If test results reveal that you suffer from a sleep disorder, we can then customize a sleep treatment plan to help with your sleep patterns.  Patients suffering from sleep disorders are treated at either our
Norwalk or Orange locations.
