Allergy Shots

Allergy shots (Allergen immunotherapy) are not only a common treatment for allergies, but also a very effective one. For individuals who suffer from rhinitis, allergic asthma, or conjunctivitis, the team here at our Norwalk clinic administers allergy shots to help minimize reactions. Patients must be over the age of 5 to receive these allergy shots which do provide long lasting relief from symptoms.

The effects of allergy shots are dependent upon how long a treatment program lasts and the dose of allergen provided. The allergy doctors here in the Norwalk clinic work alongside of you to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets with your specific needs.

Build-Up Phase

The build-up phase is an important part of the treatment program. During this phase, injections of increased amounts of allergens are administered 3 or 4 times per week. The results of your injection treatments will depend on how well the injections were received and tolerated over an 8-month period which is tracked by our allergy physicians.

Maintenance Phase

Your immunologist or allergist will take time to determine what your effective dose level is prior to your maintenance phase of treatment. When the levels are formulated, adjustments will be made to your treatment schedule. Schedules are normally adjusted to two times per week, with a 3-day break in between each treatment.

Decreased symptoms are often noted during the maintenance phase. At the completion of this 4-month phase, we administer a test to determine if you need further injections. If you choose to terminate your allergy shots, you must first talk to your immunologist.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy shots are effective in that they decrease symptoms affiliated with many allergies and help to reduce the chance of developing new allergies. If, after 4 months, you do not see signs of improvement we will redesign your treatment plan.
