What to Know About DOT Physicals
What is a DOT (department of transportation) Physical?
If you’re a commercial driver, then you need to have your DOT (Department of Transportation) physical, or CDL physical exam, every two years. DOT physical exams are mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). These physicals determine if the driver is healthy and doesn’t have health-related issues.
Extremely regulated, D.O.T. Physicals are given to assess whether the driver is physically and mentally capable of handling a commercial vehicle without being a threat to other drivers on the road. It exposes any type of mental, physical, and emotional issues. D.O.T. medical practitioners are trained to evaluate the laws to prevent any drivers from being inappropriately disqualified. Visit our Orange, CT location to get your D.O.T. Physical, or CDL physical exam.
ARE CDL PHYSICALS THE SAME AS DOT PHYSICALS?
They’re the same—the DOT physical exam is sometimes referred to as the “CDL physical exam.” This is because the DOT physical exam is also a requirement for those looking to obtain a CDL (commercial driver’s license). Not all commercial drivers need a CDL, but most will need the Medical Examiner’s (ME) Certificate that they receive from a DOT physical.
