Allergen immunotherapy is a long-term treatment that decreases symptoms related to rhinitis, allergic asthma, or conjunctivitis (eye allergy). It is given as an allergy shot to decrease allergic sensitivities over time. Adults and children over five can be treated.
The effectiveness of allergy shots will vary from patient to patient. The results depend upon the length of your treatment program, the dose of the allergen, the severity of your symptoms, and the duration of the Connecticut allergy season.   Â
As part of your treatment program, you start in the build-up phase, which involves injections with increasing amounts of the allergens 3 or 4 times weekly. Depending on how often you require injections and your tolerance response, this phase could last as long as 8 months.
After completing the build-up phase, your allergist will determine the effective dose and move you to the maintenance phase of treatment. Treatments during this phase will be administered twice weekly.Â
During the maintenance phase, you will likely notice that your symptoms have ‘calmed down’. If a decrease in symptoms occurs, you will continue in the maintenance phase for 4 months. At the end of 4 months, an allergist will perform a test to see if you need additional injections.
