Food Allergies

It is estimated that 4-6% of children are affected by a food allergy, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Food allergies vary, with some quite simple and others more complex, such as Anaphylaxis, which is a life threatening allergic reaction. It impairs breathing, causes blood pressure to drop, and if not treated immediately with an injection of epinephrine (adrenaline) can be fatal. Here at our Bridgeport allergy center, our allergy doctors are on hand to prescribe epinephrine as needed along with other treatment options.

Mild Symptoms May Include:

  • Hives (reddish, swollen, itchy areas on the skin)
  • Eczema (persistent dry, itchy rash)

Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in Bridgeport, CT

Allergy Shots

Another common treatment option is that of allergen immunotherapy or otherwise known as allergy shots. Shots are a long-term treatment for people who suffer from rhinitis, allergic asthma, or conjunctivitis (eye allergy.) This treatment is administered to those patients over the age of 5. Immunotherapy has many benefits, contributes to long lasting relief from symptoms and is very cost-effective.

Depending upon the dose of the allergen and the length of your treatment program, results will vary. Here at the Bridgeport center, our allergy physicians customize treatment plans based upon allergy season timelines and the severity of a patient’s symptoms.

Build-Up Phase

The build-up phase involves administering injections with increased amounts of allergens 3 or 4 times per week. The phase treatment duration will depend on how often the injections are received and how well the shots are tolerated, but typically, run for about 8 months.

Maintenance Phase

The effective dose level of a patient is determined by sensitivity to allergens and by the responsiveness to the build-up phase. The maintenance phase follows after having determined the effective dose level. Once you enter the maintenance phase, treatment schedules are then adjusted to twice per week, with 3 days between each treatment. The immunologists and allergy doctors here in the Bridgeport clinic will work right alongside of you and determine your best course of treatment.

Often times patients will note a decrease in symptoms during this important phase. Maintenance treatments last approximately 4 months and are followed up with an annual test to determine if, after the 4 months, additional injections are needed. If patients wish to terminate allergy shots, this must be discussed with the allergist or immunologist.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy shots can be quite effective simply because they decrease symptoms affiliated with many allergies and because they can also prevent the development of new allergies. If patients have not experienced some level of improvement after 4 months of therapy, the allergy team here in Bridgeport will redesign a new personalized treatment plan to suit your needs.
