Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in Hamden, CT

Allergy Shots

Allergen immunotherapy or allergy shots, are a very common and effective treatment provided here at the Hamden clinic. Those suffering from rhinitis, allergic asthma, or conjunctivitis which is an eye allergy, are more often than not treated with allergy shots. However, patients must be over the age of 5 to receive the shots, which do provide long lasting relief from allergy symptoms.

These shots present with various results which are primarily dependent upon how long a treatment program lasts and the dose of allergen provided. The allergy physicians here in the Hamden clinic spend long hours developing personalized treatment plans that meet with the specific needs of our patients.

Build-Up Phase

The build-up phase is an important next step in your treatment. During this phase injections of increased amounts of allergens are administered 3 or 4 times per week. Depending upon how well injections are received and tolerated over an 8-month period, results of treatment will vary.

Maintenance Phase

Your immunologist must determine what your effective dose level is before you can enter the maintenance phase of treatment. Once these levels are formulated, your treatment schedule will be adjusted to twice per week, with a 3-day break in between each treatment. Here in the Hamden clinic we are diligent in our efforts to design a customized treatment plan that is perfect for you.

During the maintenance phase, many patients will notice minimized symptoms. At the completion of this phase, typically 4 months, we will administer an annual test to determine if you require additional injections. If you choose to change or terminate your treatment, you must discuss your concerns with your immunologist.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy shots have proven to be quite effective in decreasing symptoms affiliated with many allergies. They also help to reduce the chance of developing new allergies. If you do not see improvement after the 4-month period, then we will redesign a new treatment plan for you.
