Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in North Haven, CT

Allergy Shots

Allergy Shots, (Allergen immunotherapy) are an effective long-term treatment for allergies. They decrease symptoms linked to rhinitis, allergic asthma, and conjunctivitis (eye allergy), but can only be administered to patients over 5 years of age. Sensitivity to allergens are minimized by allergy shots which also lead to long lasting relief over time.

Depending upon the length of your treatment program and your specific dose of the allergen, the effectiveness of your allergy shots will vary. Our dedicated North Haven allergists work right alongside of you when designing your treatment plan.

Build-Up Phase

The next stage of treatment here at our North Haven clinic is that of the build-up phase. During this phase, injections with increased amounts of the allergens are administered between 3-4 times per week. The timeframe for your build-up phase is determined by your injection schedule and how well you tolerate your shots. A typical build-up phase extends about 8 months.

Maintenance Phase

If you respond well to the build-up phase, we next move into the maintenance phase, which sets longer periods of time between your treatments. The new schedule is usually 2 times per week with a three-day break in between. Your personal allergist or immunologist will determine the appropriate treatment range for you.

During the maintenance phase you are apt to witness a decrease in your symptoms. If allergy shots prove to be an effective treatment for you, the maintenance phase will be continued for about 4 months. At the end of that 4-month period, we will perform a test to determine if you require additional injections moving forward. These tests are performed annually. If you choose to change treatment or terminate your allergy shots, you must consult with your allergist or immunologist first.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy Shots have proven to be an effective form of treatment that decreases symptoms affiliated with many different allergies and also prevents the development of new allergies. Here at our North Haven clinic, our skilled immunologists and allergists are diligent in designing a personalized treatment plan for you.
