Allergy Shots
Allergen immunotherapy, better known as allergy shots, is a long-term treatment for allergies that decreases symptoms for those suffering from rhinitis, allergic asthma, or conjunctivitis (eye allergy) even after treatments are completed and decreases sensitivity to allergens. Adults and children over five can benefit from allergy shots, which are also cost-effective.
The effectiveness of administered allergy shots will differ from patient to patient. The results depend upon the length of the treatment program, the dose of the allergen, the severity of symptoms, and the duration of the allergy season. Our allergy doctors will ensure your customized treatment plan fits your needs perfectly.
Phases of Allergy Shot Treatments |
|
Build-Up Phase |
Small, gradually increasing allergen doses are given to the patient once or twice weekly for 3 to 8 months to build tolerance. |
Maintenance Phase |
Injections are given to the patient every two to four weeks for several years, with regular check-ups to monitor progress. |
Build-Up Phase
The build-up phase of your treatment plan involves injections with increasing amounts of the allergens, approximately 3-4 times per week. The length of the phase depends on the injection schedule and how well you tolerate them. This phase typically lasts 8 months.
Maintenance Phase
The maintenance phase follows the build-up phase and begins after reaching the effective dosage. The effective maintenance dose depends on sensitivity to the allergen and responsiveness to the build-up phase. The maintenance phase consists of treatments twice weekly, but with a longer period in between, usually three days apart. The allergists here at the Southington clinic will determine what range is best for you.
During this maintenance phase, you are apt to notice decreased symptoms. If the allergy shots are successful, your maintenance treatment will continue for nearly 4 months. At the end of the 4 months, we will perform a test to determine if more injections are necessary past the 4 months.
Patients must discuss with the allergist or immunologist if they wish to terminate allergy shots.
How Effective Are Allergy Shots?
Allergy Shots are effective in decreasing symptoms associated with many different allergies. They also help to prevent the development of new allergies. If, however, you have not seen any improvement, your Southington physician or immunologist will work with you to develop an improved treatment plan.
