Allergies We Treat in Southington, CT

Food Allergies

Studies performed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reveal that an estimated 4-6% of children suffer from food allergies. Allergies can be simple or complex, with one of the most life-threatening allergic reactions being that of Anaphylaxis.  Anaphylaxis should be treated immediately since it impairs breathing and causes blood pressure to drop which can ultimately be fatal. Our immunologists administer injections of prescribed epinephrine (adrenaline) to counteract the reaction. Whether simple or complex, here at the Southington clinic our allergy doctors treat them all.

Mild Symptoms May Include:

  • Hives (reddish, swollen, itchy areas on the skin)
  • Eczema (persistent dry, itchy rash)
  • Nausea or vomiting

Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in Southington, CT

Allergy Shots

Allergen immunotherapy or better known as Allergy Shots, is a long-term treatment for allergies that not only decreases symptoms for those suffering with rhinitis, allergic asthma, or conjunctivitis (eye allergy) even after treatments are completed, but also decreases sensitivity to allergens overall.  Adults and children over the age of 5 can benefit from allergy shots which are also considered to be quite cost-effective.

The effectiveness of administered allergy shots will differ from patient to patient.  The results are dependent upon the length of the treatment program and the dose of the allergen as well as the severity of symptoms and the duration of the allergy season. Our allergy doctors will make sure your customized treatment plan fits your needs perfectly.

Build-Up Phase

The build-up phase of your treatment plan involves receiving injections with increasing amounts of the allergens approximately 3-4 times per week. The length of the build-up phase depends on how often the injections are administered and how well you tolerate them.  This phase typically is ongoing for an 8-month period of time.

Maintenance Phase

The maintenance phase follows the build-up phase and begins once the effective dose is reached. The effective maintenance dose depends on sensitivity to the allergen and responsiveness to the build-up phase.  The maintenance phase consists of treatments 2 times per week, but with a longer period of time in between, usually 3 days apart from one another. The allergists here in the Southington clinic will determine what range is best for you.

During this maintenance phase, you are apt to notice a decrease in symptoms.  If the allergy shots are successful, then your maintenance treatment will be continued for nearly 4 months.  At the end of the 4-month period, we will perform a test to determine if more injections are required past the 4 months.  If you decide you no longer want to engage in allergy shot treatments, you must discuss this with your allergy doctor.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy Shots have been proven to be effective in decreasing symptoms affiliated with many different allergies.  They also help to prevent the development of new allergies. If, however, you have not seen any improvement, your Southington physician or immunologist will work with you to develop an improved treatment plan.
