Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in Stratford, CT

Allergy Shots

Allergen immunotherapy or better known as Allergy Shots, is another effective treatment for various allergies. These shots are a long-term treatment that decreases symptoms related to rhinitis, allergic asthma, or conjunctivitis (eye allergy). Allergy shots also decrease sensitivity to allergens overall. Adults and children over the age of 5 can receive this very effective treatment.

From patient to patient, the effectiveness of allergy shots will vary. The results are dependent upon the length of your treatment program, the dose of the allergen, the severity of your symptoms as well as the duration of the allergy season.

Build-Up Phase

As part of your treatment program, you are required to participate in the build-up phase, which involves allergists administering injections with increasing amounts of the allergens 3 or 4 times per week. The length of this phase depends on how often you require injections and how they are tolerated but could last as long as 8 months.

Maintenance Phase

Following the build-up phase and once your allergist has determined your effective dose, you will be required to participate in the maintenance phase of treatment. Your treatments during this phase will take place twice per week with a 3-day lapse in between. Your best course of treatment will be determined by one of our highly skilled immunologists.

During the maintenance phase, you will more than likely notice minimized symptoms. If a decrease in symptoms occurs, you will remain in the maintenance phase for a 4-month period. At the end of the phase, an allergist will perform a test to determine if you need additional injections. If you decide you no longer want to treat, you must discuss your concerns with your allergist.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy Shots have proven to be a very effective form of treatment for many allergies by presenting with a decrease in symptoms. Allergy shots also help to prevent patients from developing new allergies over time. If, however, no improvement occurs, then our team here in Stratfor will need to redesign your personalized treatment plan.
