What We Offer

Our allergy clinic treats environmental and food allergies for patients of all ages. DOCS Medical specializes in a combined allergy and asthma management program with annual retesting to ensure your treatment is working. Our gold-standard allergy treatment is allergen immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots. These injections are periodically given on a strict schedule to build your tolerance slowly. Over time, your body learns to adapt and not overreact to the allergens triggering your symptoms, providing lasting relief.

Allergy shots are ideal for patients who:

  • Struggle with year-round or seasonal symptoms
  • React to multiple environmental triggers
  • Have asthma worsened by allergies
  • Want to reduce or eliminate long-term medication use

The effectiveness of your personalized treatment will depend on your unique allergen profile, the treatment duration, and how consistently you stick to your schedule. We understand that going to the clinic to get your shots may not always be convenient, so we designed an
at-home shots program for your convenience.

Treatment Options at Our Allergy Center in West Haven, CT

Allergy Shots

Allergen immunotherapy, better known as Allergy Shots, is a very effective, long-term form of treatment for allergies. They not only decrease symptoms and sensitivity to allergens; they also prevent the development of other allergies over time. Our allergy physicians here in West Haven administer allergy shots to patients over the age of 5.

Allergy shots are very effective, but the overall effectiveness will depend primarily on the severity of the patient’s symptoms, the allergen dosage, the length of their treatment program, and the duration of the allergy season. Results will vary from patient to patient.

Build-Up Phase

As part of your treatment plan, you will be required to participate in a build-up phase, which usually lasts about 8 months. The actual duration of the phase is determined by how often you need injections and how well you tolerate them. During this phase of treatment, injections with increasing amounts of allergens are administered 3 or 4 times weekly.

Maintenance Phase

Once your allergy doctor has formulated your effective dose and you have completed the build-up phase, you will participate in your treatment’s maintenance phase. During this phase, you will receive treatment twice a week with three-day breaks in between. Your immunologist will determine the best treatment course for you.

Many patients notice decreased symptoms during the maintenance phase. If you notice minimized symptoms, your maintenance plan will be extended for four months. At the end of the four months, one of our allergists will perform a test to determine if you need additional injections. If you do not want to further your treatment, you must talk to your allergist.

How Effective Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy Shots are among the most popular and effective treatment options at the West Haven clinic. They minimize symptoms and prevent other allergies from developing over time. However, if patients do not see any improvement with allergy shots, your allergist will need to redesign your treatment plan.
