What to Know about STD Testing

What happens during an std testing?

STD testing is quick and easy, depending on the type of diseases you may think you have. We examine specific symptoms (sores, pain, discharge, etc.), type of sexual contact and medical/sexual histories. Then we will develop a testing and treatment plan for you. The doctors will ask what types of sexual history you’ve had to understand the types of STDs you may have come into contact with, and then will administer any necessary tests. Different STDs require different testing methods, so multiple tests may be utilized.
Testing samples can sometimes be done in our office, but others may be sent out for evaluation. While it can be uncomfortable to talk about STD testing, it’s vital to get treated as soon as possible for the risk of future complications.

Types of Testing:

*Urine or blood sample

*Swabs (mouth, genitals, sores, discharge)

*Physical exam

It’s not uncommon for patients to feel gross or uncomfortable discussing their sexual histories or taking the tests, which is hwy we stress that all tests are done with confidentiality. An untreated STD is going to cause further problems, so it’s imperative that you get tested. Once the test is complete, we can send the sample to an outside lab or even test it directly in the Branford office.
