What to Know About DOT Physicals

What is a DOT (department of transportation) Physical?

Understanding what a DOT physical is – A DOT (Department of Transportation) Physical is a physical examination required by the Department of Transportation for its commercial driver’s every two years. The exam evaluates the physical condition and capabilities of each driver, and their ability to adhere to public safety requirements. These physicals are mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in their efforts to confirm that a commercial driver is not only in good health but not suffering from specific health conditions such as sleep apnea, diabetes, poor vision or high blood pressure all of which are detrimental to their driving performance.

One of the primary benefits of DOT physicals is the overall safety of the individual drivers. Health conditions that are the result of physical, mental, and emotional issues easily affect the driving skills and requirements needed to handle a commercial vehicle. With that said, the team of specialists here at DOCS Urgent Care of Danbury are specially trained to administer DOT physicals and are fully trained in DOT and safety regulations which allows for them to make a fair and accurate assessment of DOT drivers and their ability to perform their work adequately and drive safely.

What do i need to bring to the DOT Physical?

When you schedule your DOT physical here at our Danbury clinic, patients will need to present a valid driver’s license, prescription lenses if applicable, hearing aids if applicable, and a complete medical history. Drivers are also asked to identify any of the following conditions that they may be affected by:
  • Brain injuries
  • Epilepsy/Seizures
  • Hearing loss
  • Diabetes (insulin dependency)
  • Impaired Vision
  • Stroke
  • Missing Limbs
  • Chronic Pain

What is included in a DOT physical?

Vision

Commercial drivers are required to test at least 20/40 in each eye whether with or without corrected lenses in order to receive a passing rating for their physical examination.

Hearing

All CMV drivers according to the FMCSA, must be able to hear a “forced whisper” at less than five feet with our without a hearing aid, the equivalent of an average hearing loss in the better ear of less than 40 dB.

Blood Pressure/Pulse Rate

Appropriate blood pressure and pulse rate testing is performed to ensure that drivers do not suffer from high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats or any other type of cardiovascular disorder.

Urinalysis

CMV drivers must also undergo a urinalysis which is used to determine the presence of any underlying medical conditions. A urinalysis helps to detect the early onset of a variety of medical conditions including, but not limited to, high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney infection.

In the physical examination you will be tested for:

  • General appearance (weight, tremors, drug/alcohol problems)
