What to Know About Allergy Shots & Treatment

WHat Are Allergy Shots?

If you choose to get Allergy Shots (immunotherapy) in our East Haven clinic as your treatment plan, then you should know you’ll be given these as an injection. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you’ll get them over a period of three to five years at frequent intervals. The goal of the injections is to reduce and eventually prevent allergy attacks completely.

It’s the only proven method that has the potential to rid you of your allergy entirely by helping your immune system learn not to react to the allergen. As time goes by, the allergen dose is increased until full strength is obtained. The Allergists in our East Haven Urgent Care will help you decide which treatment plan best fits your needs.

What Type of Allergens Can Immunotherapy Treat?

Immunotherapy treats a wide range of allergens effectively.

Indoor allergens – If you experience allergy symptoms all year, you might be sensitive to allergens like dust mites, mold, cockroaches, and pet dander.

Insect allergens – If you have an allergic reaction from stings or bites from bees, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets then it’s probably an insect allergen.

Seasonal allergies – Seasonal allergies occur during spring and summer as the pollen is released from trees, weeds, and grasses. Asthma and hay-fever are frequent reactions.

Higher Risk Individuals Include :

  • Children 5 years and younger
  • Adults 65 years and older
  • Pregnant women or women up to 2 weeks postpartum
  • Individuals living in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities

Who Should Get Allergy Shots?

Allergy Shots (immunotherapy) are effective for most patients. They are an especially good treatment for these types of patients:

  • Those with medications that do not effectively control allergic reactions
  • Those looking for long-term relief from allergies that want to stop using allergy medications
  • Those allergic to insect stings
  • Those who have other medications which conflict with or counteract their allergy medication
