What to Know About DOT Physicals

What is a DOT (department of transportation) Physical?

Our medical experts can administer your DOT Physical in our North Haven, CT office. A DOT (Department of Transportation) physical is obligatory every two years for any individual that operates a commercial vehicle. It evaluates if the driver is physically and mentally healthy enough to drive a commercial vehicle. DOT physicals are mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It ensures the driver doesn’t have health issues like sleep apnea, poor vision or high blood pressure.

Highly regulated, D.O.T. (or CDL) Physicals are given for the safety of the driver. It reveals mental, physical, and emotional problems that might negatively impact the driver’s ability to drive a commercial vehicle safely. D.O.T./C.D.L. medical physicians are qualified to assess the laws to prevent any drivers from being inappropriately disqualified. Come by our North Haven, CT clinic to get your D.O.T. Physical.

ARE CDL PHYSICALS THE SAME AS DOT PHYSICALS?

You may see a DOT Physical Exam being referred to as a CDL Physical Exam, but know that they are the same test. This is because a DOT Physical Exam is a requirement for an individual looking to gain a CDL (commercial driver’s license). This type of testing is normally called the DOT Physical, because not all commercial drivers require a CDL, some may simply require the Medical Examiner’s (ME) Certificate that can be received from a DOT Physical.
