Our Comprehensive Pulmonary Treatments

When Should You Be Tested?

Some pulmonary problems, such as COPD, can develop for many years without any symptoms. It’s easy to mistake breathlessness, coughing and other symptoms relating to the lungs as a normal part of aging. That’s why it is important that you talk to your doctor or consult with one of our specialists as soon as you notice any of these symptoms.

Pulmonary Diagnosis Services

If you believe you may have a lung or pulmonary disorder or you have been referred to a specialist, our Orange respiratory doctors can help diagnose your condition. To provide a more accurate diagnosis, we specialize in methods such as bronchoscopy, transthoracic needle biopsy (TNB) and thoracentesis.

Bronchoscopy

To properly examine your throat, larynx, trachea or lower airways, one of our specialists may perform a bronchoscopy on you. This type of procedure allows us to look directly at your airways through a thin, lighted tube called a bronchoscope. We will use a bronchoscope to find the cause of your airway problem, take tissue samples, diagnose lung diseases, or even control bleeding.

Types of bronchoscopy we specialize in:

  • Flexible Bronchoscopy: This type of procedure does not often require general anesthesia and includes using a thin, lighted tube to look at your airwaves. It tends to be more comfortable and offers a clearer view of the smaller airwaves and allows your doctor to remove a small sample of tissue.
  • Rigid Bronchoscopy: Normally used to remove large tissue samples for biopsy and performed general anesthesia using a straight, hollow metal tube. We may also use this procedure if there is bleeding blocking the airway or if there are other objects blocking the airway where a flexible bronchoscope cannot do.

Transthoracic Needle Biopsy (TNB)

We will perform a transthoracic needle biopsy (TNB) primarily for outpatients with the help of local anesthesia. This type of procedure can provide an accurate diagnosis for most thoracic lesions and can help us determine where the lesions are. The most common areas are on the pleura, lung parenchyma or the mediastinum.

Thoracentesis

If we find that you have fluid or air surrounding your lungs, we may perform a thoracentesis where we can remove the excess fluid or air between the lungs and the chest wall (pleural space). This procedure can help diagnose the cause of pleural effusion by removing pleural fluid that we can then run tests on. For the short term, this procedure will also relieve shortness of breath and pain caused by pleural effusion.
