What to Know About DOT Physicals / CDL Physicals

What is a DOT (department of transportation) Physical?

All commercial drivers need to go through a DOT (Department of Transportation) physical—a.k.a. CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) physical—every two years. DOT physicals, are regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). These decide if the driver is healthy and free from any potential health-related problems.

D.O.T. physicals / CDL physicals are given to any driver working as a commercial vehicle operator. It assesses the mental and physical health of every driver to determine if they can safely drive without posing a risk to other drivers. D.O.T (CDL) medical clinicians are qualified to evaluate the regulations to prevent any drivers from being inappropriately disqualified. Visit our Stratford, CT clinic to have your D.O.T. Physical (CDL physical) administered today.

ARE CDL PHYSICALS THE SAME AS DOT PHYSICALS?

DOT physicals are tests that all commercial drivers need to take every two years. To obtain a CDL (commercial driver’s license) a DOT Physical is also needed. Not everybody calls it the same exam. For these drivers who are renewing or obtaining a CDL, the DOT physical will often be referred to as a “CDL physical.”

Not all commercial drivers need a CDL, but most will need the Medical Examiner’s (ME) Certificate renewed annually, which can be earned from a DOT physical. DOT physicals can be taken for different reasons among different people.
