What to Know About DOT Physicals

What is a DOT (department of transportation) Physical?

A Department of Transportation physical evaluates a driver’s vision, blood pressure, and medical history. DOT physicals are required of a driver every 24 months. Our FMCSA certified Docs Urgent Care doctors will examine our West Hartford patients.

Our D.O.T. medical physicians are highly experienced and trained to evaluate the regulations to stop any drivers from being disqualified. Commercial drivers in the West Hartford, CT area, be proactive, and stop by your local DOCS Urgent Care for your DOT exam.

ARE CDL PHYSICALS THE SAME AS DOT PHYSICALS?

Yes, these two names are referring to the same physical. Sometimes the DOT physical is called the “CDL physical” because a person is specifically looking to renew or earn a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License). This physical is required for them to fulfill some necessary medical requirements.

What do i need to bring to the DOT (or cdl) Physical?

Before your DOT (CDL) physical, make sure you bring with you your valid driver’s license, a review of your medical history, any prescription glasses or contact lenses, hearing aids if necessary, and a list of current prescriptions. This will save time, and give your doctor the information needed to proceed.

Drivers are required to list if they’ve endured any of the following:

  • Brain injuries
  • Epilepsy/Seizures
  • Hearing loss
  • Diabetes (insulin dependency)
  • Impaired Vision
  • Stroke
  • Missing Limbs
  • Chronic Pain
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Able to recognize colors (red, green, yellow)
  • History of alcoholism or drug use
  • Heart attack or heart disease
  • Kidney disease

What is included in a DOT physical?

Vision

Your doctor will test your vision for at least 20/40 in both eyes and make sure you’re able to distinguish various colors. (With or without prescription lenses)

Hearing

Drivers must be able to perceive what is known as a “forced whisper” at less than five feet away with or without their hearing aid.

You can receive a second opinion as long as you are honest with your medical history. Leaving out information can lead to a disqualification or future fines.
