What to Know about STD Testing

What happens during an std testing?

STD testing is an uncomfortable thought for some, but we make the process quick and efficient. Our West Hartford clinic is staffed by professional physicians who will run tests based on your description of symptoms and medical history. Our physicians will ask for a brief history of sexual activity in order to gain a larger idea of any contact with STDs. Depending on which test the physicians administer, testing will either be done straight in the West Hartford office or in a lab that we send the sample to. While possibly difficult, it is important to get tested if you believe you are experiencing any symptoms. Leaving an STD untreated may allow for it to become a bigger problem.

Testing doesn’t take long and many samples can be evaluated in our office. Other samples will need to be sent off for evaluation. Yes, it’s uncomfortable to bring up the topic of STD testing but it’s vital that you seek treatment right away as opposed to later.

Types of Testing:

  • Urine or blood sample
  • Swabs (mouth, genitals, sores, discharge)
  • Physical exam

Depending on which tests you have received, the sample will either be tested directly in our West Hartford office or may be sent to an outside lab. It is not uncommon for patients to feel uncomfortable requesting a test for an STD or STI (sexually transmitted infection), but it is important to be tested if you’re experiencing any symptoms, as an untreated STD can cause further complications.

What Types of Treatment are available at DOCS Urgent Care of West Hartford?

First, we can treat the following STD’s:

  • HIV/AIDS
  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Gonorrhea

  • Hepatitis C
  • HPV
  • Herpes

After our physicians diagnose your STD, you will be given options for treatment. If you are given a prescription for an antibiotic, we recommend that you carefully follow intake instructions regardless of how soon symptoms are relieved. We will work hard to find the best treatment that fits you, and keeps both you and your sexual partner’s health maintained.

When Should You Get Tested?

If you are sexually active, have multiple sexual partners, have recently had unprotected sex, an infection or symptoms of any STD, we recommend a test. Each STD has a different incubation period. If you are unsure of whether or not you have come into contact with an STD, you should come into our West Hartford office to receive a diagnosis.. Even if you show no symptoms, getting screened can provide you the comfort that you are STD-free and healthy.
